Status Update – Votes are still being counted….

November 5, 2010

I received the email below from Ace Smith, Campaign Strategist for Kamala Harris for Attorney General. It lays it out pretty clearly.

In spite of Steve Cooley’s declaration of victory at 11:00 pm Tuesday night – which was followed six hours later by a cancellation of a Wednesday morning “victory” press conference – San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris will be the next Attorney General of the State of California. Here is why:

  • With 100% of precincts reporting, Kamala Harris has won the Election Day count by 14,838 votes, 45.9% to 45.7%.
  • Uncounted ballots will only bolster Kamala Harris’ lead, as they will reflect Harris’ strong Election Day advantage.
  • Considering that Cooley jumped out to a 50% to 42% lead on Tuesday night thanks to early absentee ballots – and considering where the vote total ended up – our model shows that Kamala Harris clearly won the vote on Election Day by 3%. The provisional ballots cast on Tuesday will reflect Harris’ victory.
  • The late absentee ballots will reflect Harris’ late surge in the race – which was captured both in public and private polling.

We will be providing updates on a regular basis in the coming days.

Thank you for all your support,

Ace Smith

Kamala Harris Declares Victory In CA Attorney General Race

November 3, 2010

From The San Francisco Appeal

A late overnight surge in votes that carried San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris into the lead in the race for state attorney general has her campaign declaring victory today.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting as of 12:39 p.m., Harris, a Democrat, led Republican Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles district attorney, 45.9 percent to 45.7 percent, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office.

Harris had trailed Cooley until the early morning hours.

“In spite of Steve Cooley’s Dewey-esque declaration of victory” late Tuesday night, a statement from Harris’ campaign said, “San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris will be the next attorney general of the state of California.”

Harris has so far received 3,292,836 votes, and Cooley 3,277,998 votes.

Elections officials must still tally provisional and absentee ballots, so the results are not final.

However, Harris’ campaign asserted that “uncounted ballots will only bolster” Harris’ lead.

A spokesman for the Cooley campaign did not immediately return a call for comment.

Close Race, still no results. HAVE FAITH!!!

November 3, 2010

It has been a long night (and day) to say the least. The final results have yet to be announced. As of this morning, with 96.9% precincts reporting, Kamala Harris has a slight lead with 46.1% and Steve Cooley at 45.6%.

According to the LA Times, “Cooley declared victory [last night] and scheduled a victory press conference for Wednesday morning. But as the race tightened, Cooley’s campaign announced he was canceling the press conference until the race had a more definitive result.”

Kamala Harris once said in interview that “We have to stand by our faith.” I have never forgotten that and I will stand by my FAITH today and until this is over, in HOPE that her lead remains!
